Happy New Year!
Thank you for your support to DHCC(Dahua Cybersecurity Center) in 2017. We look forward to providing more robust and secure products/solutions support in 2018.
As suggested by OWASP Top 10 – 2017, “Misconfiguration” is the most commonly seen issue. Below is a kind reminder of 2 simple but effective actions that can raise your security level by a big step.
1. Use Strong Passwords and Change Passwords Often
The number one reason systems get “hacked” is due to having weak passwords. Dahua recommends choosing a strong password whenever possible and changing passwords often. A strong password should be made up of at least 8 characters and a combination of special characters, numbers, and upper and lower case letters.
2. Update Firmware
As a standard procedure in the tech-industry, we recommend keeping NVR, DVR, and IP camera firmware up-to-date to ensure the system is current with the latest security patches and fixes. Check the firmware release of your running devices. If the firmware release date is over 18 months old, please contact a Dahua authorized local distributor or Dahua technical support for available update releases.
With the increasing threat of cyber-attacks geared towards video surveillance systems, DHCC will be publishing more tips and recommendations on our website on how to create a better protected security system. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of following the industry’s best practices such as keeping all unused ports closed. Otherwise, it is like leaving a side door opened to potential exploit. Wish everyone a safe and secure New Year in 2018!
