Case Study Background
The Way Youth Zone in Wolverhampton opened in 2016 to support young people aged 8 to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. The charity has welcomed more than 20,000 individual young people through its doors and regularly supports over 100 young people in a single evening.
Safeguarding is central to the organisation's work. Before the upgrade, The Way faced several security challenges including poor image quality, CCTV coverage blind spots and a limited access control system.
The existing entrance arrangements also made it harder to move young people safely and efficiently from outside the building into the youth zone. The organisation needed a modern system that could improve visibility, strengthen access management and support staff in protecting young people throughout the site.
The Solution
Richard's CCTV worked closely with The Way Youth Zone and Dahua Technology to design a security and access control solution tailored to the organisation's safeguarding requirements.
The CCTV system was upgraded with Dahua high definition technology, providing significantly clearer images and improved coverage across the site. The enhanced system reduces blind spots and gives staff better visibility of young people while activities are taking place.
High quality video also enables staff to retrieve information more quickly when an incident needs to be reviewed, helping them make informed safeguarding decisions using clearer evidence.
The entrance system was upgraded with intelligent access gates, creating a faster and more controlled process for young people entering and leaving the building. This has helped reduce reception bottlenecks and supports safer movement through the main entrance.
Facial recognition is used for staff access, allowing authorised employees to enter and leave without reception staff having to manually release doors or gates. This improves efficiency while maintaining controlled access to the building.
The completed system combines improved video security, intelligent access control and streamlined entry management to provide a safer and more efficient environment for staff and young people.

The Result
The upgraded security system has given The Way Youth Zone much greater visibility across its facilities, helping staff better protect young people during busy evening sessions.
Improved image quality and reduced blind spots allow staff to locate and review relevant footage more quickly, while the new access gates provide a more efficient and controlled way for young people to enter and leave the building.
Facial recognition access for staff has reduced pressure on reception by removing the need to manually manage routine staff entry and exit.
The overall result is a more secure, efficient and user friendly environment that supports The Way Youth Zone's safeguarding responsibilities while allowing staff to focus more of their time on the young people they serve.
Through having the new CCTV, we have much more visibility on our young people and can better protect those young people while they're in session.
