Overview
Located in the Italian Dolomites, Marmolada is a major mountain and ski destination welcoming more than 500,000 visitors annually. Its cable-car infrastructure extends across a challenging alpine environment, connecting parking and public areas with stations, technical facilities, restaurants, and panoramic viewpoints at high altitude, including facilities reaching 3,265 meters.
With large numbers of visitors moving through these areas and critical cable-car equipment operating throughout the resort, Marmolada required a surveillance system capable of supporting both visitor safety and infrastructure monitoring. More importantly, the technology needed to remain reliable in the extreme weather conditions characteristic of the Dolomites.
Challenges
Providing effective surveillance in Marmolada presented challenges far beyond those of a conventional installation. Cameras had to operate across geographically dispersed indoor and outdoor locations while providing continuous visibility of people, public spaces, and important infrastructure.
The high-altitude environment was particularly demanding. Freezing temperatures reaching approximately -25°C, heavy snow, snowstorms, fog, and other low-visibility conditions could compromise conventional surveillance equipment and image quality. Marmolada therefore needed cameras capable of maintaining dependable 24/7 operation despite severe weather, while allowing operators to efficiently oversee the extensive system from a centralized location.
Solutions
To address these monitoring pain points, Marmolada selected Dahua Technology to deploy a comprehensive video surveillance solution covering its cable-car infrastructure, from parking areas and stations to technical rooms, restaurants, public areas, and panoramic locations.
More than 40 Dahua cold-resistant cameras, including heated models, were installed at strategic points throughout the resort. Designed for demanding outdoor environments, these cameras provide reliable operation at temperatures down to approximately -25°C, helping maintain continuous surveillance even during severe winter conditions.
The video outputs of the project demonstrate the capabilities of various Dahua cameras (e.g., bullet, dome, and fisheye units), allowing surveillance to be adapted to the different requirements of outdoor infrastructure, indoor facilities, circulation areas, and operational spaces. The cameras deliver high-quality imaging even under challenging visibility conditions such as snowfall and heavy fog, giving personnel clearer situational awareness when conditions are most difficult.
At the management level, the surveillance network is centrally managed through Dahua SmartPSS. Instead of monitoring isolated systems individually, operators can access camera feeds and oversee different areas through a unified platform, simplifying day-to-day surveillance across the extensive mountain infrastructure.
Results
The Dahua solution has provided Marmolada with comprehensive, around-the-clock monitoring of both visitors and critical infrastructure, while overcoming the environmental limitations associated with high-altitude surveillance.
Reliable cold-weather operation helps maintain surveillance continuity throughout the winter season, while improved imaging supports visibility during adverse weather. Centralized management through SmartPSS further enables personnel to monitor multiple locations more efficiently and respond with greater awareness of conditions across the resort.
By combining ruggedized cameras, flexible coverage, dependable imaging, and centralized management, Dahua has delivered a surveillance infrastructure suited to one of the most demanding environments in which video security technology can operate, helping Marmolada protect its facilities while providing a safer and more effectively managed experience for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
